New Method 4 | Reflect on the Role of Your Emotions
This is your weekly affirmation to help you build your personal philosophy. Have a great weekend!
Take a deep breathe in...and say it with me...
We commit to understanding what drives our emotions, knowing that some are reflexes to our past traumas and some are cavewoman responses to survive and are out of our control. Neuroscience tells us that our brains are ancient, with three distinct areas that govern us. The brain is so old that sometimes it still thinks we are hunter gatherers and at risk of being eaten by predators. It becomes hypervigilant to keep ourselves safe against forces that are no longer threatening. In order not to be completely consumed by these ancient responses, we endeavor to create breathing room between our emotions and our decisions, understanding that they reside in completely different areas of our brain. When we experience an extremely negative emotional response, we take pause and ask ourselves where it’s coming from, and if it serves us right now.
Actions
- What situations make your heart race and your emotions extreme?
- Is your reaction relevant for the situation?
- Practice taking pauses before responses, whether its 10 deep breaths, a day, a week or more. Give your emotions time to respond.
