Born to be a Babygirl...
Today is my first day of freedom! Productivity content is over. The last child has been dropped back to their parents. My son is now back at school and the holidays are officially over. I have a full month of exciting projects forthcoming and I am more than eager to work. I've definitely overindexed on domestic labour and I take it as a personal affront. The grindstone is more attractive to me than the kitchen stove. Welcome back to my regular scheduled programming...
The Happy Place
When I dropped the last child off, I raced to my happy place - the cinema - to watch Babygirl (2024), I have just returned home, had debrief phonecall with my friend Kharmel Cochrane on the movie and am now writing to you. Have you watched it? What did you think?
Today I wanted to write a newsletter on Love, Sex, Power & Pleasure. Primarily asking - can you have them all? It has been a preoccupation of mine because I currently seek a long term love but I am not yet sure I am willing to give up any of the sex, power or pleasure parts. However I need to let the movie sit with me a bit.
The Way I Write
My process is this: things happen to me or my friends and we talk about it, I then tend to have a powerful Recticular Activating System which means I start to see those themes everywhere, and then I turn to books, movies and music to see how humans have reflected these anxieties, dreams and conditions into art. I then spend a few days digesting it all and THEN I write.
I finished the most excellent biography on Cleopatra this morning in the bath. I watched Babygirl this afternoon and I am watching Anora (2024) this evening so please forgive me because I need some time to gather my thoughts on how and why these women made these choices, and did it serve them? Will it serve me?
